Frequently Asked Questions

What makes you different from other design consultancies?

Dedication and commitment to honing the skills and experience we bring to the pursuit of engineering and industrial design are paramount in ensuring that we provide a service that is second to none. The willingness to work with flexible solutions coupled with the experience to help you avoid unwanted compromise. Low overheads, strategic use of technologies and relationships with key associates combine to ensure cost and time effective collaboration.

“Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.”
– Thomas A Edison

How do you work smarter rather than harder?

We start by listening to our customers and focusing on their needs.
We offer the management and engineering tools most suited to each customer’s individual project requirements. We plan for efficiency and keep overheads to a minimum so that we can pass the savings on to our customers.

“How do you eat an elephant?”
“One bite at a time”

Does it cost anything up front to talk about my project?

No it costs nothing to talk. We’re always more than happy to talk about new projects and offer our initial guidance completely free of charge. If you like our terms, which we’re sure you will, then we can provide you with a quote and often start work immediately.

“Talk is by far the most accessible of pleasures. It costs nothing in money, it is all profit, it completes our education, founds and fosters our friendships, and can be enjoyed at any age and in almost any state of health.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

How well do you understand my industry?

We have industry experience in a wider range of industries than most, but our policy is always to assume nothing. Listening is our best and most valuable tool, and you know your industry better than most. Whenever we set out to collaborate on a project with a new customer their knowledge combines with ours to redouble the focus we bring to your project.

We do nonetheless have extensive experience from Industrial Design, Aerospace, Automotive, Mining, Consumer products and Appliances, Manufacturing,Tooling, Sports and Leisure and working with new Inventions.

“I know nothing except the fact of my ignorance” – Socrates

What Software and Hardware do you use?

We mainly use Unigraphics NX CAD/CAM software along with CATIA V5, and occasionally Alias Studio Tools, or Solidworks to suit specific clients.

We choose Unigraphics because as the name suggests it delivers outstanding capacity to express all aspects of the design process across the widest range of industries and has excellent extended support for rapid prototyping, reverse engineering and manufacturing.

The hardware we employ is basically a high performance version of an ordinary desktop or laptop computer. With the aid of some additional pointing devices and sketching tablets we’re able to extend the capacity to do extraordinary design work while maintaining access to all of the ordinary communications and collaboration tools available on a regular PC and via the Internet.

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”
Arthur C. Clarke

How do you communicate your designs?

We start with the basics which for us always come back to the 3D CAD model definition. The basic ways to communicate design are through images and animations some of which you will find on this site. There are of course also drawings, but digital data files also play a big part in translating geometry into formats suitable for a wider range of processes.

There are also many ways to review and interact with a design and we will work with you in setting up and using viewers and web conferencing tools if you wish to have that assistance in visualising designs though technology.

Why chose an Australian Based design service?

Wherever you are in the world the truth is that your market is probably global. As a developed nation with skill levels second to none Australia offers access to cutting edge technologies at costs which are much lower than Europe or North America due to favourable exchange rates.

I’m a long way from where you are how do we communicate?

We have access to all of the communication tools that you have come to expect from the traditional phone and fax to more cost effective tools like email and VoIP services such as Skype, Hangouts or Messenger Services. Our links pages will help you to find tools and services for exchanging data, video conferencing and desktop sharing via the internet. Our experience co-ordinating local and international projects has been key to establishing the means to communicate to and from anywhere in the world.

What about confidentiality?

We have confidentiality agreements in place with dozens of companies and are entrusted to keep their ideas safe. Our non disclosure and Privacy policies are key to keeping your sensitive information out of the public domain. All material used for our own promotional purposes has been doctored or provided only with specific client approval.

We maintain data using secure disk encryption and employ firewalls with multiple layers of protection for all project related material. Data always backed up, and is also stored and transmitted only in encrypted archives for your protection.

We can also provide you with a standard non-disclosure pro forma to legally protect your confidential data.

How long will it take to design my project?

The truth is that we never know until we discuss the scope of any design. When we do so we will offer solutions and tailor them to suit your needs. At this stage we will be able to provide indicative quotations and estimate the time of delivery for you. One of the difficulties in offering design services is that clients are not always certain about how their needs can best be met and what form the deliverables might take. We offer free consultation and guidance prior to commencement of any project to provide that information. In addition we provide simple tools for you to using in setting out your requirements clearly and succinctly in order to provide the framework we use to respond to your needs.

“How long was I in the army? Five foot eleven.” – Spike Milligan

How much will it cost?

Depending on the project specification we will calculate cost as a fixed hourly rate that varies only slightly depending upon the content you require. We will do so in a completely fair and transparent manner preferring to be open in our dealings with all of or clients. If the job takes substantially less time than the initial quotation then it may be only reasonable to conclude that the content has diminished and charge accordingly. If on the other hand we offer a fixed price then we understand that you place great store in our reliability and undertake to honour our commitments.

Finally interpret the quote below as you will but know that we don’t compromise on quality.

“Good, Fast, Cheap pick any two” – Anon

How are you more cost effective than other companies?

Low overheads are a stated virtue of our business model. We don’t pay for facilities or services that we don’t use and we pass those savings on to you. We quite simply concentrate of provide and lean but fully featured suite of services coupled with skill, dedication and expertise that other companies provide at a premium.

What do I get for my money?

You get the provision of design services, the agency we provide in working with various associates, the delivery of materials and data to meet your requirements on time and on budget and last but by no means least quality work the we stand behind with the backing and reputation gained though years of service.

What services to you provide?

In summary we provide Engineering Design, CAD Modelling, Reverse Engineering, Styling and Industrial Design, Drafting, Prototype and Tooling, Technical Documentation, Animations and Images for marketing, Data translations, Training and Consulting services.

How about project management?

By staging reviews over a number of key design milestones investment decisions can be made to manage your investment according to how the design progresses. Key phases would typically include milestones such as Concept approval, Feasibility, Prototype release, Design Freeze, Drawing Release, Testing and final revisions before the Production Release. Not all projects and industries work with same milestones and this is where our experience in working with and listening to our customers serves to focus our efforts on the essential objectives.

What about prototypes and tooling?

We have rapid prototyping options which can produce low volume low cost samples of designs with lead times measured in days rather than weeks. Materials may vary from mechanically representative plastic compounds to straight visual facsimiles of the 3D CAD models in lower cost compounds.

We can also access rapid tooling options which deliver higher quality off tool samples with very short lead times and in larger quantities at competitive cost and timing. Typical lead times are in the order of a few weeks and production tooling for injection moulding can in certain cases be reduced to as little as 6-8 weeks.

How big is the glass?

“To the optimist, the glass is half full. To the pessimist, the glass is half empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be”
